It seems to me that the majority of the containers I see on train pics in Europe are 20 ft long units. On occasion 40 footers.

Here in Canada, the minority are 20 ft, and the majority used to be 40 ft. Now it is not uncommon to see 53 footers. 48 and 44 footers abound too.

I've always wondered how the ships cope with handling these varying lengths of containers.

And I'm curious whether these longer "oddball" units are seen in Europe too?

I think that ships only carry 20ft, 40ft and 45ft containers. 48ft and 53ft are only for domestic services within the USA and Canada.

Most containers here are a mix of 40ft and 20ft, with some 45ft.

Off topic slightly, but the BBC are following a shipping container for a year to see what happens to it...

And you occasionally get the odd 10 footer on the back of a lorry, But I have never seen one on a modal.

slightly o/t...

It just occurred to me that the train colours of nsb and dsb were the same... mainly red, and with black. Were these two rail co's .... how shall I say, aligned (to merge?) at one time?
