Sad One feature whch I wish Bachmann had included is READ from the loco chip. Very Happy Hornby's 'Select' unit has this facility at least for the loco address.
Bachmann includes READ which I believe can tell you the complete CV of the decoder in Dynamis Pro.

Is there an easy way to find out the address on a decoder previously programmed ? Also, why are some of my locos averse to giving up address 03 ? Confused

First whatever you are doing ensure all wheels are clean and Program track is clean.

To be honest Bachmann and Hornby systems are toys IMHO.
If you really want a flexible system buy a lenz. It does everything you are worried about and more.

I have had mine umpteen years now and never had a problem. and sorted several other peoples problems with it.

If a chip will not give up it's address it is probably because the voltages given by your unit are not large enough to change the memory of the chip.
3 reasons for this.
1 dirty track, wheels
2 crepe/cheep chip
3 crepe/cheep command module

It really is that simple.

I have chipped well over a thousand locos. I have had five failures of chips on install, all of which were replaced by manufacturer . and one very spectacular failure of a chip (indoor fireworks) while "soaking", 1'st 15 min of operation (aslo replaced by manufacturer with compen for body damage). I have also chipped locos from n to g.

My advice is don't be afraid. if you have a problem go back to the place you bought your kit from and complain.
