As far as I know there are only two active WWII bombers in the UK - the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight's Lancaster and a B-17, Sally B, which flies out of Duxford.
My guess is that you'd have seen the Lancaster, but there's no information on the NNR site to confirm. The Sally B site doesn't mention a planned flying day on 2nd September, so that seems to rule the B-17 out.
[Later: in fact, if I'd bothered reading the News section of the Sally B site, I'd have seen that's she's grounded until at least next year. So it definitely wasn't the B-17 you saw, and therefore I guess it must have been the Lancaster!

OK, now I'm well confused.
I've looked at the Battle of Britain Memeorial Flight site and their Lancaster was out of action for an engine for a couple of weeks from the end of August.

Looked like the Lancaster to me.
Certainly not a B19 (totally different tailplane).
Also Lancaster flew on the 29 August at the Bournmouth air Festival.

Certainly confusing. There is a lancaster in canada still flying but I would doubt they would bring it over here. Do you have some higher res photos by any chance Alan.

Sorry about the date confusion - I missed a '0' off. Amended now. Would have been the Lanc. then. Difficult to see any markings but just a silhouette against the sky. It appeared so suddenly, just as the WD was arriving, then turned round and did another pass (but did not drop any bombs!)
