I have had some thoughts about the voting for the POTM
Instead of using the forum poll could we post our votes. Most of us actually say how we voted and why anyway. Also instead of voting for just one photo we could list our top 3 something like 3 point to first place, 2 to second and 1 to third. I appreciate this will involve some work collating the results. this month we have seen some great photos and some of them have gone unrecognised voting wise which is a shame. It's just the germ of an idea and obviously more thought and discussion will have to be put in to this subject. _________________ D6841

Actually, if you remember, that is how we used to originally vote, infact, it`s identical, even with the 3,2 and 1 points!
Many of you wanted to change away from this, and wanted the poll instead. I always preferred the old system myself......... |

As I suggested before we could run three polls. Split the month into three and vote on pictures taken within each third. Then have a final vote with the three winners to determine 1,2,3. _________________ 35* down, 11 to go. |

Blimey, we'll all deserve a prize if we can keep up with this! |

I don't recall the 3,2,1 points system myself. Might not be a bad idea, but then the splitting it into 3 rounds could also work.
Agreed totally that lots of brilliant photos lose out each month. Such is the popularity of this competition and the excellent standard every month which is continually rising. However I cannot come up with a fairer way of doing things. Maybe we should have a general competition and more specialist rounds. By which I mean we could have all the steam loco photos entered into one round and we pick our favourite from that. I'd suggest doing the same with rainy photos but we'd all have so many photos for that round alone it would be no easier to choose! _________________ Julian

Another alternative would be to reduce the number of entries but I don't think this would necessarily be a good thing. _________________ 35* down, 11 to go. |

Right......I've put some more thought into this and come up with this idea.
Voting split into two rounds.
First round Vote by photographer. say 7 days voting.
It shouldn't matter if a member has posted 1,2,or 3 photos, If a photo is good it will still stand out although if a photographer enters two or more good photos he stands a greater chance. Most of us enter three anyway.
Second round Vote by photo.
top 4 photographers including ties. Individual pictures to be voted on.
What this is trying to achieve is if someone has one cracking photo they will get the recognition they deserve but it will balance out against those who are consistantly good.

What I was meaning was if someone gets a lucky shot where everything goes absolutely perfect then that shot will shine through but if the first round is voted by photographer then continuity will shine through as well.
I know what I mean but I am not very good at explaining it.
The other thought I had was that round 2 could be a run off between the first 4 or 5 nominated photographers but only one photograph each which they would nominate from their three submitted.
Can anyone actually understand where I'm going with this.
As a demonstration, With your agreement Jason, I will set up the vote for POTM for August with the old system which will be the scoring system.
Alongside I will set up an alternative which won't score but may give us an insight as to how this could work. Up to you Boss If you've finished your decorating (been there, done it, got t-shirt) _________________ D6841

Ok, you can go ahead with that, will be interesting to see. I`ve just had so very little time lately, with lots of meetings and exams at work, and then the decorating! Have got many T-shirts, mainly spattered with ceiling paint!! |

Polls are up and running and will possibly arrive at the same results. who knows anyway it will be interesting to see the results.
It would also be interesting if those who vote in the NOT the August vote would tell us why they voted in the way they did. was it because they liked one particular photo or was it based on two or three photos. _________________ D6841
